Irish Young Philosophers' Awards

Dear parents,

I hope you and everyone in your family are keeping well under the circumstances.

I want to bring to your attention an initiative which may be of interest to your children in the school: the Irish Young Philosophers Awards.

Last year we had 10 students from Calasanctius presenting projects at this event, the second year running. President Michael D Higgins presented the awards at the Awards Ceremony in UCD.

Because of the COVID-19 restrictions, there was not going to be any IYPA this year. But due to popular demand, the organisers are offering the opportunity to submit projects on the theme of the Pandemic lock-down.

The idea is to think about the many implications of what we are living through worldwide: personal (mental health, education, freedom and autonomy), social (friends, distancing, family), political, financial, ethical, legal, etc. And to submit a short project in whatever format they prefer: essay, podcast, song, video, poem, artwork, short story. Written projects must be less than 800 words.

More information about this initiative can be found here: or here:

The deadline for submissions is 18 May 2020: only a few weeks away, so get them thinking! There will be awards for different age groups and different categories. It's all explained on the websites linked above.

Please discuss it with your sons and daughters and encourage them to submit a short project: it will help them reflect on the unique period of history we are now going through and so will benefit better from it.

Best wishes: stay safe and well!
