Sports

Athletics

Athletics was introduced to our college a decade ago. It was boosted, encouraged and developed by the huge growth in surrounding clubs. The added interest of the local clubs keeps Athletics flourishing in our school. The huge bonus for our students is that you don’t have to be a member of a club to represent Calasanctius in the school Competitions. Like our other sports, Athletics have enjoyed many successes at County, Connacht and All Ireland level. There is a large commitment, with this sport, as an event can take the entire day to complete due to the huge range of activities and large volumes of entrants. Calasanctius College enters the indoor, Cross Country and Track & Field Events every year. The All Ireland Competitions take place in Dublin and Calasanctius is always represented.

Basketball

There has been a long tradition of School Basketball in Calasanctius College. In fact, some of the volunteers have been training our school teams for over twenty years. We have won many titles in both male and female disciplines from Western Region Cups to All Ireland Cups. We have students training with Irish teams, making the long journey to Dublin, on a regular basis, to train. We have participated at World competitions in Turkey, France and China. Many of our students have gained sports scholarships due to their involvement and success in Basketball. Teams: Boys- First Year, U15, U16, U19 Girls- First year, U15, U16, U19

Cala Swim Club

Swimming Competitions have become a regular occurance, for our school, over the last few years. This year was one of our most successful with a total of 9 medals at the Connacht Swimming Gala on January 8th 2016. These students will now represent our school in the All Ireland swimming Competition in the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin. Our Parents Association donated €200 to buy the Swimming team a set of jerseys. These students train independently and with their clubs, but come together to represent our school.

Camogie

Camogie plays a vital role in our local community and as such is reflected in our school. There has been a long, and valued, tradition of camogie in Calasanctius. We have won many titles, brought home lots of silverware, and reached All Ireland finals. It offers the girls competition, comradery, skills and memories. Camogie, like any sport, takes commitment, volunteerism and dedication. It is offered across all years in our school, from first year through to Leaving Cert. We have many present pupils and past pupils on various Galway teams. Camogie is an integral part of school life in Calasanctius College. Teams: First year, Minor, Junior & Senior.

Equestrian Club

The Equestrian Club at Calasanctius has been active for a number of years. Students participate at individual level and at Novice team level. They enter, on average, six to eight competitions per year. Individual riders have qualified for the National finals for the last three years. They retain the Novice title on an annual basis, receiving a coveted plaque for their efforts.

Gaelic Boys Football

Boys Gaelic Football has developed greatly over the years. It brings another sport into play for the boys and is hugely supported at club level. School football encourages boys from all backgrounds to get involved. They don’t need to be registered with a local club or may even be taking up the sport for the first time. Our Gaelic teams has reached many finals at county and Connacht level. Teams: First year, Juvenile, Junior and Senior.

Gaelic Ladies Football

Ladies Gaelic Football provides a social outlet and a healthy activity for many girls in Calasanctius College. There are many competitions and events run throughout the year, ranging from first year blitzes, to Inter County Competitions, to Connacht Competitions. Our aim is to encourage girls to play Gaelic, regardless of whether they belong to a club or not. We have had many successes over the years. Currently we hold the U16 City League Cup Title for the last two years running. We secured a full set of gear from Lidl last year, having received the highest number of votes in our community store. Teams: First Year, U13, U14, U15, U16, U17 & Senior.

Hockey

Hockey was first introduced to Calasanctius College in 2010 and has been incredibly popular and successful ever since. Currently there are four teams competing in Connacht Competitions. The Senior and U16 Competition takes place from September to December whilst the U15 and First year competitions are held from January to Easter. Last year the Senior team won the Ward Cup and the u 16 team won the Howley Shield. The school teams are affiliated with the Irish Hockey Association Connacht School’s Branch. Hockey, in Calasanctius College, offers girls the chance to play hockey for the first time or to enhance skills built up at club level. It creates a positive environment and support network for our students. Teams: First year, U15, U16 & Senior.

Hurling

Hurling has enjoyed many successful years in our College. Currently there are over eighty boys involved in hurling. Situated in the heart of a hurling home, Calasanctius receives support from the local club, opening up their grounds for matches and training. School Hurling provides extra training for boys during their lunch times. It is also a common sight to see boys playing hurling against the rear wall of the school during their breaks and in the morning, before school commences. Teams: First Year, Juvenile, Junior and Senior.

Lunchtime Games and Activities

There are a variety of Lunch Time activities held that are aimed at students who wish to be entertained during their lunch times, without the element of competition. The primary focus of this group is to have fun and to gain a social outlet. Activities that are catered for are: Indoor Soccer, Basketball, Unihoc, Dodgeball, Board Games and so on.

Soccer

Soccer has been an integral part of Calasanctius College for many years. We have enjoyed many successes namely the Tom Ticher All Ireland U17 Cup last year, coupled with the U17 Connacht Cup, U15 Connacht Cup and the coveted Allen McKinstry International Cup in 2015. We have also had our students represented on Irish Schools teams, both boys and girls. We are immensely proud of our many achievements. Soccer provides an avenue of exercise, self-confidence and valuable teacher-pupil relationships. Teams: Boys – First Year, U15, U16, U17 & U19. Girls – U19

Rugby

Rugby has formed the backbone of our college for over twenty years. It provides a valuable outlet for boys to compete in various competitions and also learn about the importance of discipline. Our first year team competes in three blitzes throughout the year whilst our older teams experience the fantastic pitches of Galway, & Connacht’s, finest Rugby clubs. Calasanctius Rugby Teams have many players involved who are not playing club rugby. This sport opens up many avenues for students, giving them a sense of achievement and boosting their self-confidence. Teams: First Year, U16, Senior.
